The Times has been named as Britain’s most trusted newspaper, according to research from Oxford University.

A study of 74,000 people internationally (2,117 from the UK) gave The Times a trust score of 6.35 out of 10, beating competitors including The Guardian, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph on 6.24, 6.05 and 6.02 respectively.
However, this was comparatively low compared with Britain’s broadcasters, with the BBC (7.02); ITV News (6.79) and Channel 4 News (6.68) all performing well.
Local newspapers earned an average trust ranking of 6.42.
At the other end of the scale titles such as The Canary and The Daily Mail fared badly, with scores of just 4.69 and 4.6.
Lower still, social media was found to be increasingly mistrusted with just 23% of people globally willing to put their faith in news content found on platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
Shifting opinions are reflected in the number of people using Facebook as a news source in the UK, which dropped 2% in a year to 27%. In the US, where social media news penetration is higher, there was an even more precipitous drop of 9% to 39%.
Facebook’s image has been tarnished by a succession of fake news and data scandals although its score has also dropped as a result of changes to its news feed algorithm which gives priority to content posted by friends and family over posts from media organisations.
