In honor of Earth Month, former astronaut Doug Hurley is rallying consumers to protect the only planet where beer can be enjoyed: Earth.

Houston, we have a problem: physics won’t let people drink beer in space.

To celebrate April, or Earth Month, Anheuser-Busch beer brand Busch Light has enlisted Doug Hurley – a former NASA and SpaceX astronaut, who was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in January – to tell consumers about the future of beer in space.

Spoiler alert: there isn’t one. According to Hurley in the ad, the weightlessness of space prevents carbonation from rising, turning beer into a foamy mess and the act of knocking back a cold one impossible. Therefore, Busch Light seeks to save the only planet where drinking beer is guaranteed.

“When you’ve spent 93 days in space, it’s easy to recognize the many facets of our home planet that you’ve taken for granted – family and friends, fresh food, personal space and the ability to drink a crisp, cold beer,” said Hurley in a statement shared with The Drum.

“It’s shocking but true: there is no beer in the final frontier. So I’m partnering with Busch Light this Earth Month to help protect and preserve our only beer-friendly planet because nothing beats drinking an ice-cold beer after a long trip across the universe.”

Throughout April, Busch Light says it will donate some of the proceeds of every beer case sold to One Tree Planted, a nonprofit that helps facilitate reforestation worldwide. Busch Light will also donate all profits made from its new merch collection, available at busch.com/caseagainstspace, to One Tree Planted.

For a chance to win a year’s supply of beer and a space helmet, consumers can share on social media a creative case for why it’s better to stay on Earth drinking beer instead of going to space; tag @BuschBeer and include both #Contest and #CaseAgainstSpace in the post. Entries close on April 30.
